Municipal Association of South Carolina honors Seneca with Achievement Award

The City of Seneca received a Municipal Achievement Award for its water treatment plant upgrade. Officials accepted the award during the Municipal Association of South Carolina's Annual Meeting on July 16. The city won in the public works category. Constructed in the late 60s in tandem with scenic Lake Keowee, the Seneca water treatment plant supplies water to more than half of Oconee County. In the time since its construction, a residential area had grown next to the plant, and the unattractive facility had developed operational and safety issues.



City officials formed a unique partnership with the neighboring homeowners' association to address residents' safety and aesthetic concerns. At the same time, they began brainstorming ways to improve the plant's operations while providing an aesthetically appealing venue for community functions.

With input from city leaders as well as neighborhood representatives, the project's engineers and architects developed logistical and design strategies for a covered water treatment plant on Lake Keowee that would double as an attractive conference space.
