JOB ANNOUNCEMENT –CHIEF BUILDING OFFICIAL


The City of Seneca is seeking a progressive and pro-active individual to perform Building Inspection activities with the city. Strong interpersonal, customer relations, technical and computer skills are essential. The Successful candidate must have thorough knowledge of general construction principles. Responsibilities include enforcing all building and safety codes, reviewing building permit requests for residential and commercial construction, and performing building and code inspections, among others. Applicants should be certified in the inspection disciplines or have equivalent training and acquire certification within the first year of employment. Individuals possessing a master trade license and/or licensed builder are encouraged to apply.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Oversees Building Inspections and protects the life and property of the City by enforcing adopted building codes. Reports to the Planning & Development Director. Supervises the Codes Enforcement Officer.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
(A) Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in either architecture, structural
engineering, building technology with construction management or building science and
(B) Five (5) years of experience as a building inspector or in general construction and related fields, or
(C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of uniform building codes, electrical codes, plumbing codes, mechanical codes, general construction codes, and carpentry.
• Considerable knowledge in electrical work, carpentry work, cement work, or plumbing.
• Skill in applying knowledge of national building codes, zoning, and land use applications.
• Skill in the operation of the listed equipment.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors, develops, architects, engineers, owners, and the public.
• Ability to read and understand complicated plans and blueprints.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
(A) Must possess or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid SC driver’s license.
(B) Must be certified through the South Carolina Building Codes Council as a General Combination inspector (G2) or can obtain the certification within a specified time frame and must be subsequently certified as a Building Official (G1) within 24
months of hire or certification of General Combination Inspector.
(C) Must be certified in Plans Review by IBC.
